STRIPED BASS EASY LIMITS IN SHALLOW WEEDS WITH CHATTERBAIT & BLADED JIGS

We’re locating stripers in shallow flats with lots of current over large weed flats. For many years, I’ve been targeting weed flats while other boats have blown past or stopped and got skunked. I’ve been catching lots of stripers starting in the fall through the spring and found an easy way to limit out quickly. One of the main food source for stripers are crawdads that live and feed in these weedy areas. When I first discovered these stripers feeding voraciously in shallow waters, it rang a bell in my head as I was fishing for largemouth bass at the time.

However, it was an issue trying to find a lure that would go through the weeds without getting covered in weeds. If you’re pulling up your lure with weeds, you’re just not going to catch fish. Tried rattle traps, ripping them through the grass and it worked to catch striped bass. But out of ten casts, only five times would the rattletrap come back weed free. I’ve always said if you can come up clean every time you will catch more fish!

Then I discovered that when working chatterbaits in the correct manner, I could get my lure to come back clean almost ten out of ten times! If you watch my bass chatterbait videos that I posted earlier, you will see which action rod, reel and line that I prefer…it’s a combination I found that works great. Enjoy this video and you will catch loads of stripers in the weeds!

FISH FINDER 101: 2D SONAR - PART 2: NOISE, RANGE, SPLIT, PALETTES, SCROLL SPEED & PING | EPISODE 2

This is my second video on 2D Sonar and I’m going through some of the settings that will help you understand and get more out of your unit. If you’re not sure which frequency to use, try Split Screen and see one side on 83kh and the other at 200kh and compare the two side by side and then switch to the one that’s working the best. Adjust the range to be able to see more in the water column to find the fish. I’ll go through the Color Palettes, which is especially helpful if you’re color blind or fishing at night. We’ll look at Scroll Speed and Ping Speed and learn how to adjust them. I’ll discuss Noise Rejection, which filters the picture, and why if turned too high then you won’t be able to any fish. So watch this video and I know it will help you make those fine adjustments.
This is the second of six episodes on fish finder technologies:
1) Episode 1: FISH FINDER 101: 2D Sonar – Part 1: Sensitivity, Colorline, Arches, A-Scope & Frequency – https://youtu.be/IocBrRECMYQ
2) Episode 2: FISH FINDER 101: 2D Sonar – Part 2: Noise Rejection, Range, Split Screen, Palettes, Scroll Speed & Ping – https://youtu.be/TMSGpzZjcP8
3) Episode 3: FISH FINDER 101: DOWNSCAN
4) Episode 4: FISH FINDER 101: SIDESCAN
5) Episode 5: FISH FINDER 101: ACTIVE IMAGING
6) Episode 6: FISH FINDER 101: 360 & TRANSDUCER PLACEMENT

FISH FINDER 101: 2D SONAR - PART 1: SENSITIVITY, ARCHES, A-SCOPE & FREQUENCY | EPISODE #1

90% of anglers are using their fish finders incorrectly. They’re either underutilizing the functions or their settings are just plain wrong so they can’t find the fish. I’ve been in the tackle business for nearly 30 years helping anglers set up their fish finders. Lowrance sends out their reps to work with me when I give seminars. Most brands have very similar technologies so the information in these videos are applicable no matter the model or brand. I’ve been using fish finders since the days of the paper graph!
In this video, I’ll introduce the different technologies and then go into depth on 2D Sonar, which has been around for many years and is still being used to this day. You’ll learn how to get out of auto mode and dive into manual mode. I’ll show you how to set up Sensitivity, Colorline, Arches, A-Scope & Frequency to get the most out of your fish finder and explain why each of these settings are important and what they do. 2D Sonar is such an important technology that I’ve broken the subject into two videos. So please check back for Part 2: Noise Rejection, Range, Split Screen, Palettes, Scroll Speed & Ping. After watching this series of videos, I’m sure you’ll be able to fine tune your fish finder to catch a whole lot more fish!
This is the first of six episodes on fish finder technologies:
1) Episode 1: FISH FINDER 101: 2D Sonar – Part 1: Sensitivity, Colorline, Arches, A-Scope & Frequency – https://youtu.be/IocBrRECMYQ
2) Episode 2: FISH FINDER 101: 2D Sonar – Part 2: Noise Rejection, Range, Split Screen, Palettes, Scroll Speed & Ping – https://youtu.be/TMSGpzZjcP8
3) Episode 3: FISH FINDER 101: DOWNSCAN
4) Episode 4: FISH FINDER 101: SIDESCAN
5) Episode 5: FISH FINDER 101: ACTIVE IMAGING
6) Episode 6: FISH FINDER 101: 360 & TRANSDUCER PLACEMENT

TESTING IS YOUR BOAT HOT OR NOT? KOKANEE LIMITS 1/2 HOUR: LEADCORE, DOWNRIGGERS & SETBACK | EPISODE #2

I’m going to show you how to catch kokanee using leadcore and downriggers. The first rod I set out in the early morning is my leadcore and most of the time it’ll hook up even before getting the downrigger rod out. You have to know some important tips if you want to limit out fast. I’ll clue you in on how I scent shoepeg corn and how to tip the hook. How long the leader is behind the dodger is key to getting the right action. The distance in set back before you clip it into the release is critical to hooking up. And this next tip applies to anyone using downriggers: How to check if your boat is hot or not – giving a negative charge off the cable. I’ve seen it countless times where one boat just can’t catch – if your boat is HOT, you won’t catch anything!

WHAT YOU NEED TO CATCH KOKANEE | EPISODE #1

Kokanee season is right around the corner! I’m going to show you how to locate and catch them. We’ll cover all the kinds of equipment you’ll need, including rods, reels, downriggers and lures. Learn how to read your fishfinder electronics and understand what you’re seeing. The key to easy limits is controlled depth fishing with downriggers so you’re placing your lures exactly where the fish are feeding.

CAN YOUR LINE DO THE FIGURE 8? LOCATE & CATCH FISH WITH CHATTERBAIT & BLADED JIGS IN THE CALIFORNIA DELTA | EPISODE #2

I’ll teach you how to work your line to get the best action for stripers, making a figure eight. It’s spring time and that means it’s time to get out the chatterbait! First, you need to have the right kind of rod to get the most action out of the chatter bait. Any of the cranking glass rods will work fine because the tips are very relaxed and will let the chatterbait vibrate. Some companies like Shimano make a glass composite rod and they work great!

Then you should be using a reel with 6:1 gear ratio or slower. I use 50 lb power pro line with a 2 feet piece of Yozuri Hybrid 25 lb test line connected with the Alberto knot and it has never failed me yet. Then you need to use the right trailer, which is the Yamamoto Zako. If I want a wider wiggle then I put on a split tail worm and it totally changes the action! With a 6:1 ratio I reel the lure in real slow, sometimes even stopping for a second before retrieving again. There are times when the bass will swallow this lure and sometimes they’re hardly hooked and get off! I actually catch a lot of stripers on this lure too!

Last fall I caught a 34 lb striper on a chatter bait in 2 to 3 fteet of water. Last fall we were using chatterbaits for stripers as they were in the weedy flats chasing crawdads.

This is the second in a two part series on bass fishing with chatterbaits:

CHATTERBAIT & BLADED JIGS - FISHING IN WEEDS IN CALIFORNIA DELTA AT HIGH & LOW TIDES | EPISODE #1

Last fall I caught a 34 lb striper on a chatter bait in 2 to 3 feet of water. Last fall we were using chatterbaits for stripers as they were in the weedy flats chasing crawdads.

This is the second in a two part series on bass fishing with chatterbaits:

STACKING DOWNRIGGERS - CONTROLLED DEPTH TROUT TROLLING; TOPLINING, SETBACK & TACKLE | EPISODE #2

When trolling for trout, I like to double stack my downriggers to target fish throughout the water column. In addition, I always topline to catch the shallow fish that you can’t even see on the fish finder. In this video in Lake Camanche, a Motherlode lake, I show you step-by-step how to double stack your downriggers. I explain the importance of setback in relation to water clarity and how I choose my setback on the top and bottom downrigger as well as the topline rod and the solo downrigger. Then, I’ll go through my favorite tackle and gear that I use trolling for trout so you can land limits!

This is the second of a two part series on Trolling for Trout:

HOW TO TROLL FOR TROUT - CALIFORNIA MOTHERLODE FISHING LAKE CAMANCHE | EPISODE #1

I’m going to take you to a Motherlode lake in California early spring and show how to troll using topline and downriggers for rainbow trout. My technique for toplining that I learned a long time ago has three main elements:

(1) How far is the setback?

(2) What speed do I troll?

(3) What kind of lures do I like to troll for the best hookup rate?

This is the first of a two part series on Trolling for Trout:

1. Episode 1: How To Troll for Trout – California Motherlode Lakes – https://youtu.be/On4PHMUwfW4

2. Episode 2: How to Double Stack Downrigger for Controlled Depth Fishing & Determine Setback Trolling for Trout; Tackle for Trolling

Do you wonder where to start fishing and which areas to try first? I’ll discuss how to locate fish on your fish finder and putting the lure in the right depth using the downrigger. Once you learn the basics of trout trolling, you’ll have your limits in no time and a blast reeling them in!

BLADE RUNNER FLUTTER SPOON SMASHES MONSTER STRIPERS -
TRIGGER HUGE HITS!

I discovered a special way to work the new Flutter Spoon from Blade Runner Tackle, which has a unique proprietary design that causes bass and stripers to attack in both deep and shallow waters. We landed stripers up to 30 pounds and the fights were awesome! I’ll review what makes this different from other flutter spoons and show you exactly how to cast and work the lure to attract and trigger strikes.
Tackle choices are critical to success and I’ve been in the industry for nearly 30 years so can tell you in detail what works and why. I’ll go over which length and type of rod and line is needed.
Please watch my video on using the same Blade Runner Flutter Spoon to target deep water bass in lakes where you’ll see in more detail how the flutter spoon moves through the water column: FLUTTER SPOON to Target HUGE BASS in OPEN WATER During Fall & Winter Shad Dieoff | DROP N’ DRAG: https://youtu.be/-oCi3Dr5N3s ttp

WHERE TO CAST SENKO, BRUSH HOG & CHATTERBAIT IN TULES, PENNYWORT & ROCK BANK TECHNIQUES | EPISODE #2

Spring is an iconic time in the bass fishing realm as the big bass come into the shallows to feed heavily and prepare to spawn. This is the time of year you have the greatest chance of landing your personal best. In this video, I’ll go through our fishing day with Denise and explain why we fished each area and chose those specific lures.
As the bass come up to search out spawning grounds, they’ll be feeding close to the bank. But during the cycle of the tides, they’ll also move into the grassy areas so you need to understand how water movement dictates where the fish will be located. I’ll go through the lures that work best for wood, tules and pennywort. Understanding how tides affect the location and bite is critical and I’ll cover how I use tides times to determine where I’ll fish that day and which lure to throw.

PITCH & FLIP BRUSH HOG TO CATCH BIG BASS - STEP BY STEP TEACHING | EPISODE #1

Pitching a Brush Hog into the wooded areas of current has won lots of tournaments. But where you pitch and how you work the bait makes all the difference between hooking huge bass and getting nothing but snags. In this video, I teach a friend step by step how to fish the Brush Hog. Then I’ll show closeups of how I pitch and detail which areas I chose to fish and why.
Tackle makes the critical difference when using Brush Hogs. In a subsequent video, I’ll go through step by step on how to rig the Brush Hog setup and explain the importance of each piece of tackle. Once you get the feel of pitching a Brush Hog, you’ll soon be hauling in the big fish!
This is the first in a two part series of Brush Hogs:

SECRET HOW TO RIG FISH TRAPS, SWIMBAITS OR PLASTIC BAITS - GET BITES & CATCH MORE FISH | TACKLE TIPS

Ever wonder why your friends get way more bites on the same 5” swimbait (aka Fish Trap or plastic bait)? Their swimbait is on straight so the lure is tracking correctly in the water. Sure it sounds simple but not many people realize or even notice how critical it is to put your swimbaits on carefully so they hold straight onto the jighead. I always set mine up at home before I go out and dab them with superglue so they don’t budge.
In this video I’ll show you close ups on how to rig your swimbaits correctly. This technique works for any plastic baits where the fish are feeding on minnows, threadfin shad or anchovies for striper, bass, etc. I also demonstrate the correct way to rig up the Z-Man ElaZtech baits that you need to know so they track straight. Try these simple and easy way tricks to prep your swimbaits and I guarantee you’ll be hooking a whole lot more fish!

FLUTTER SPOON TO TARGET HUGE BASS IN OPEN WATER DURING FALL & WINTER SHAD DIEOFF | DROP N' DRAG

Testing a prototype flutter spoon, I discovered how to get the big bass on the bottom to bite even in deep open water. After finding larger fish on my fish finder, I utilize a technique I call Drop N’ Drag that mimics the shad dieoff in the winter months. I’ll explain why this technique is so productive and show exactly how to handle your rod and reel. Tackle choices are critical to success and I’ve been in the industry for nearly 30 years so can tell you in detail what works and why.
I invite you to also watch my series on using a Kastmaster Drop N’ Drag as the technique is the same except with a flutter spoon you need to make long casts and watch your line. Here is the series of two episodes on Kastmaster Drop N’ Drag, which uses nearly the same technique but is best around structure:
Episode #1: Drop N’ Drag: Catch Huge Winter Bass Anywhere There’s Shad | Kastmaster | Part 1: Teaching – https://youtu.be/eKetHwFW9jo
Episode #2: Drop N’ Drag: Catch Huge Winter Bass Anywhere There’s Shad | Kastmaster | Part 2: Line Control is Everything & Gear Talk – https://youtu.be/Y6gcwFfXhQY
Here’s the tackle I recommend for my DROP N’ DRAG technique: *FLUTTER SPOON will be out of production soon and I’ll update the link here when it’s available for purchase – I don’t make it but am friends with the owner*

WHAT'S BITING? NORCAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT + TACKLE TIP | FEBRUARY 23, 2022

Working at one of the largest tackle stores in California for nearly 30 years and fishing a few times a week, I get first hand reports from guides and customers about a variety of fisheries and fish. I report my observations and information to newspapers and radio shows and thought that my viewers should know this timely information as well. Would love to hear how your fishing has been going, tight lines!

EPIC BATTLE: 4 LB LINE VERSUS 17 LB MYSTERY FISH ON ULTRALIGHT TACKLE

On my ultralight crappie rod with 4# test, I hooked into a huge fish that sure did test my skills. First, it snagged around a log and Warren had to pull the log nearly out of the water and managed to untangle it. That clever fish immediately made another run and pulled out over fifty feet of line and wrapped around under yet another log. I could feel him pulling and fighting hard so I knew he was a biggie. My drag had to stay incredibly loose trying not to the abrade the line on the wood. It ended up being a game of chicken when I realized there was just no way to get that second snag loose (unless, of course, if Warren took a swim, lol).
Then I came up with an solution. As the big fish rested, I took the opportunity to ask Warren to toss out his spoon and catch the line on the other side of the log. He gently reeled it in and I quickly cut the line and, using a uni-knot, reattached it to the line on my pole and the fight started anew. After half an hour, I finally got that monster to the boat.
The kicker is that this line was freshly spooled but was over 20 years old and ended up being tough as nails! If you’d like to see how to battle a monster fish and two trees on light line, then you’ll enjoy this epic battle. Sure was a great end to a day of Delta crappie fishing!

HOW TO HOMEMADE CURE BAIT & SETUP LURE TO CATCH LANDLOCKED SALMON | EPISODE 3

Building upon my brother Ron’s and my experience fishing salmon in saltwater, we started using a lure called a Gitzit for landlocked salmon. But we soon realized that just using the lure isn’t enough. So we devised a very specific technique and everyone in our boats have been limiting out ever since. I fillet and cure herring or anchovy with ice cream rock salt and then dry out the pieces overnight in the refrigerator so they stay on the hook and keep the salmon biting long enough to set the hook.
In this video, I will teach you our family secret and look forward to hearing how you limited out too! After decades of spending the entire day trying to catch a few landlocked salmon, I finally developed a technique that has me limiting out in hours. Once the lakes turn over, landlocked salmon are on the prowl for the huge bait balls that have moved up into the more shallow water column. They’re hunting en masse in voracious schools but can be incredibly difficult to target for several reasons:
1) When they’re suspended, spoons and other lures drop way too fast to be in the strike zone for more than a couple of seconds. The lure needs to be kept in the strike zone for a good while.
2) Landlocked salmon have a unique way of feeding as they attack from below the target and then keep swimming straight up like a missile for another 5 to 10 feet with the lure in its mouth. How to set the hook when you get a bite? If you swing right away, you can’t make contact as the fish is swimming towards you faster than you can move the rod.
3) Salmon spit the lure in just a few seconds. How to get the salmon to hold on long enough so you can set the hook?

LOWRANCE GHOST 360 INSTALL | HOW TO SOFTWARE UPDATE & DISPLAY SETUP

I’m going to install the new Lowrance Trolling Motor Transducer with Active Imaging 3-in-1 nosecone. Then we’ll update the software with the new 360 feature. Afterwards, we’ll go through the setup to enable the Ghost 360. The software update introduces the new Ghost 360 feature and compatibility for NAC-2 and NAC-3 autopilots. Ghost 360 offers anglers a high resolution 360-degree detailed image around their boats, allowing anglers to view both standing and laying structures. To utilize the nosecone, you need to have a Ghost Trolling Motor as well as an Elite FS, HDS Carbon or HDS LIVE unit.
Perfect for pinpointing fish-holding areas like rockpiles, standing timber, weedbeds, ditches and drop-offs, the Active Imaging 3-in-1 Nosecone transducer delivers superior clarity and the highest resolution images of fish and structure at a longer range than any other structure imaging technology.
The new autopilot compatibility introduces support for NAC-2 and NAC-3 autopilots on HDS LIVE products, making navigation easier with waypoint and route navigation right from the HDS LIVE unit. Key features include intuitive autopilot interface on the MFD, automated turn patterns, easy setup with auto tuning and calibration, and continuum steering, an autopilot algorithm technology based on decades of development, refining countless hours of real world onwater experience into a system you can trust to take the helm.
NAC-2 autopilots are perfect for boats up to 35-feet and are suitable for low-current hydraulic steering pumps, mechanical drive units, or solenoid valves, while NAC-3 autopilots are ideal for boats 35-feet or greater and are rated to operate high-current pumps, mechanical drive units, and solenoid valves. Industry-standard NMEA 2000® networking and NMEA 0183® input allow for simple connectivity to heading sensors, rudder feedback units, autopilot controllers, and multi-function displays located anywhere on the boat.

HAS BERRYESSA (FOLSOM, OROVILLE & ALMANOR) TURNED OVER TO CATCH LANDLOCKED SALMON? | EPISODE 1

When the lakes turn over, landlocked salmon come out of the depths in huge numbers chasing the baitfish. You can easily limit out in a couple of hours if you hit it right! The turnover phenomenon occurs around December or January for Lake Berryessa and results in the water temperature being the same throughout the water column. However, in my years of experience fishing these lakes, I find you can’t rely on the reports from the water district and instead you need to look for yourself at the depth that the bait fish are holding. By graphing the lake with my fish finder and then looking closely at areas with Active Target, I’ve been tracking the turnover progress for the past month.

SHARING MY SECRET TO GET SNAGS OUT - BEST TACKLE & LURES FOR CRAPPIE | EPISODE 3

I’m going to share a trick that’s a family secret to get your jigs out of snags and it works like a charm. The soft bite of a crappie is often imperceptible and their thin mouths make it easy to shake the hook loose. What makes it more challenging is they are often schooled up deep in the grass or under submerged branches and it’s easy to snag up and lose lures after lure.
With this little trick, you’ll save a bundle on tackle and can get to fishing all day long. With a plethora of crappie jigs on the market, I’ll explain which works best and why I prefer straight or paddle tails over split tail lures. I’ll go over which rods and reel are best suited and why moderate action rods might help you land more crappie. This is the third in a series of four episodes on crappie fishing:

CRAB LIMITS NEW CA REGS: TIPS & TRICKS FINDING CRAB & BAITING HOOPS TRAPS IN BODEGA BAY | EPISODE 2

My good friends Guy & John are expert crabbers and we’ll show you how to locate crab, create waypoints to drop your nets and find them easily and how to be successful and productive in the current crabbing environment. Captain Guy reveals his tricks to keep snails and pests out of his bait bags so bait lasts longer while the boat floor stays clean. Guy fabricated his own holding basket to organize nets on his boat so that the whole process runs smoothly. He explains why he uses lead core line and shows his winch retrofitted with a longer boom but still using the existing downrigger wiring.
I’ll go over the new California Recreational Crab Regulations and how you can still limit out using hoops and pulling every two hours. We got our limits in about an hour and so can you!

CATCH OFFSHORE CRAPPIE: 3 SUREFIRE TECHNIQUES, LIVE FISH FINDER, BOAT POSITIONING | EPISODE 2

Crappie are super fun to catch but can be super elusive to find. The soft bite of a crappie is often imperceptible and their thin mouths make it easy to shake the hook loose. One of the best places to find huge crappie slabs is in the grass but grass is practically everywhere. How to find the huge crappie schools? And how do you know when you have a bite and are not just brushing up against a weed or hung on the bottom?
I’ll show you exactly how to locate crappie areas in weeds and grass using SideScan and then fine tune the images in DownScan and 2D Sonar. See live movements of crappie using Active Target so you know if the fish are hugging the bottom or moving up and down in the water column. Gain an understanding of fish movements by species so you know where to cast and how to play and retrieve the lure by watching the live response on screen. You can even target the slabs by looking for schools of bigger fish. We’ll go through the settings in each mode to find the best view to delineate between the weeds and crappie.
Then I’ll demonstrate how to catch this delicious fish using three techniques: Line Watching, Bobber and Jigging. I’ll explain why I chose the type of line, weight and color. No matter what conditions you’re fishing, once you find the crappie and learn how to detect the bite, you’ll be hauling in slabs in no time.

HOW TO INSTALL LOWRANCE GHOST TROLLING MOTOR IN AN HOUR WITH THESE TIPS & TRICKS

After installing quite a few Lowrance Ghost Trolling Motors, I’d like to share tricks and tips which can’t be found in any manual. I connected the Ghost to both of my HDS-12 Live units using NMEA 2000 to share temperature sensors, digital gauges, fluid level sensors, Point-1 antenna and can even control the trolling motor from the back screen. In just an hour, you can install the Ghost and hook it up to your fish finders using my tips. I also go through the initial setup on HDS Live to make sure the units and motor are communicating with each other.
